The PhD student will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called MINDnet. The project consists of 15 Ph.D. students at 7 universities, one research center and two companies. The project has partners from eight different EU countries. All 15 Ph.d. projects are within the overall theme of neuromorphic computing and analog signal processing, targeting applications in the fields of communication, sensing, geolocalization, space and biomedical.
This Ph.D. project will take place at DTU Electro. Apart from the time at DTU there will be secondments of minimum 3 months at University of Pisa (IT), Fraunhofer Heinrik Hertz Institute (DE) and Spincloud (DE). There will also be regular meetings with the other 14 Ph.D. students in the doctoral network, including 4 training schools and two workshops.
As a participant of the project, the PhD student will become part of a team at DTU with numerical and experimental expertise in photonic computing. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Assoc. Prof. Francesco Da Ros, DTU Electro.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The exponential surge in artificial intelligence (AI), internet traffic, and online services demands a revolutionary leap in devices, computing architecture, and integration technologies. As digital computing struggles to keep up with the growing demand, in MINDnet will investigate neuromorphic computing as a promising solution to support such a demand by getting inspired by the brain’s powerful and energy-efficient processing capabilities. MINDnet aims at addressing the challenge through a holistic optimization - from individual computing devices to the overall architecture, including a focus on applications, and training methods - across multiple technological platforms - photonics, electronics, biological neurons. Photonics is a promising platform as it provides several degrees of freedom for data encoding and processing, time, frequency, space, modal content, etc. However a systematic analysis of the potential and trade-offs of applying photonic parallelism to computing is still lacking.
This PhD project aims to get an in-depth understanding of the benefits and limitations of photonic multiplexing for computing.
The project will consist among others of the following tasks:
The doctoral candidate (DC) is expected to travel to network partners under three secondments for a typical total duration of 2-3 months. Additionally, the DC is expected to participate in outreach activities including, but not limited to, YouTube videos, social media updates, participation in public events and campaigns, as well as dissemination to popular press. Furthermore, due to the mobility rules of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Lyngby-Taarbæk
If you are looking for an exciting opportunity for PhD, we at Materials and Surface Engineering section, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking candidate for one PhD position to work on corrosion focused mechanistic investigation of IGBT and SiC Power MOSFETs related components and layouts under varied humidity, temperature, gases and applied potential conditions.
The project will also include the development of advanced simulation models to characterize and predict moisture transport through gel substrate and interfacial layers within the semiconductor packages. This PhD project is part of Center for Climate Robust Electronic Design project funded by Poul Due Jensens Foundation, Denmark. The PhD position also provides an opportunity to work in collaboration with major industries involved in electric vehicles/renewable energy systems.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Environmental stressors such as humidity, temperature, and reactive gases significantly affect the long-term reliability of power semiconductor devices by inducing corrosion and electrochemical degradation. In high-voltage and high-power applications, such as automotive and industrial systems, devices like Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power MOSFETs are particularly susceptible to environmental influences that alter their electrical and thermal performance. When combined with operational stresses such as elevated voltages, switching cycles, and temperature gradients, environmental conditions such as humidity and corrosive gases (e.g., H₂S) can accelerate failure mechanisms such as electrochemical migration and anodic migration, which remains insufficiently understood.
This PhD project aims to systematically investigate failure mechanisms in IGBT and SiC Power MOSFET devices by using test structures that mimic actual components as well as actual components under varied humidity, temperature, gaseous, and electrical potential conditions. The research will involve experimental testing and detailed characterization of corrosion effects, with a focus on understanding electrochemical interactions, gel substrate degradation, and interfacial transport phenomena. Specific attention will be given to modeling moisture and gas permeation through gel substrate and interfaces using Multiphysics simulation tools such as ANSYS or COMSOL.
The study will quantify the impact of corrosion and moisture ingress on key device parameters, including switching losses, efficiency, gate stress, and thermal performance. Insights from both experimental and simulation results will be used to propose material and design guidelines for improved environmental robustness, such as optimized Cu pad and gel substrate compositions for IGBTs, and enhanced design configurations for SiC-based devices.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Specialization should be in Materials Science and engineering or related subjects such as corrosion science and engineering. Masters in electronics/electrical engineering with prior experience on humidity/corrosion reliability of electronics is also suitable. For all qualifications, prior experience of corrosion of electronics or similar topics is an advantage. A combination of knowledge in electronics, materials, corrosion, and reliability is preferred.
