PhD Scholarships in Software Engineering and Probabilistic Programming on Testing Scientific Software at IT University of Copenhagen

The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a PhD position starting in February 2026 or later.

We seek applicants who want to contribute to the IT University's vision of creating and sharing knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity.

Job description
The main objective of the project is to introduce systematic testing into the workflow of building, analyzing and diagnosing probabilistic Bayesian models designed for Monte-Carlo inference (Monte-Carlo Markov Chain, Hamiltonian Monte-Carlo) by studying semantic foundations and empirical properties of tests and by building a scalable testing library for scientists to ensure quality of models. The project is in collaboration with Copenhagen University, University of Oslo, NC State University (Raleigh) and PMC Labs.

Candidate Profile
We seek applicants with degrees in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering or related fields with background and interest in some of the following areas:

  • Bayesian Statistics: Bayesian probabilistic programming, regression models, variational inference
  • Formal Methods: Semantics of probabilistic programs, probabilistic logics, model-checking and verification
  • Software Engineering: Test automation, property-based testing, functional programming, domain-specific-languages, empirical software engineering
It is understood that each applicant may meet the requirements to different extents and for different reasons, and will not have experience in all of the above fields.

General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based university specializing in information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

Research Environment
The PhD positions will be placed in the highly collaborative and supportive research environment of the Software Quality Research Group (https://square.itu.dk) at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The group's expertise spans both the software aspects of testing, formal methods, and applied Bayesian statistics. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with international researchers (including funds for extended travel).

Salary and terms of employment

Qualification Requirements
The following qualifications are required:

  • 3-year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent)
  • 4-year programme: candidates should have a BSc and one year of university studies on Master level
The applicants will be employed and enrolled at the ITU University for a period of 3 or 4 years depending on the university degree level of the applicant.

The Senior Project Manager Role

The Senior Project Management role in Gram Equipment is a critical role in ensuring that we meet our promises to our customers as well as our internal need for profitability and well executed projects. The role is fundamentally the “CEO of the project” and responsible for managing all aspects of the contract from agreed contractual requirements and deliverables to ensuring customer acceptance at the end.

When the contract has been signed, you take over the responsibility for the project. Your background

Postdoc in translational atherosclerosis research

Odense

We are seeking highly motivated candidates for a 2.5-year Postdoc position starting February 1, 2026, or soon thereafter.

The position is part of the fully funded SIF project (“Smooth muscle cell in vitro assays for the development of atherosclerosis therapies”), which aims to develop the next generation of disease-relevant smooth muscle cell assays to bridge basic research and drug discovery. 

The project involves partners from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Aarhus University, Odense University Hospital, Novo Nordisk, and AstraZeneca - providing the succesful candidate an opportunity to gain experience in cross-sector research collaborations and serving as a platform for a future research career in academia, hospital, or industry.

Your role

You will lead SIF project work package 2, focusing on atherosclerotic plaque samples collected from local hospitals in the region. Your primary responsibility will be to develop smooth muscle cell-based assays guided by single-cell spatial transcriptomic datasets generated by project partners, and to apply these assays to test candidate drugs and interventions for potential atherosclerosis therapies.

You will play a key role across the SIF project, which also encompasses single-cell resolution spatial transcriptomics of human plaques to precisely identify and characterize disease-relevant smooth muscle cell phenotypes, a parallel track of organoid-based assays, and the upscaling of assays for industrial drug library screening. Your expertise and insights will be highly valued across all facets of the project.

In addition to research, the position involves disseminating findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, as well as contributing to professional development, university teaching, and supervision of research students.

Your qualifications

Need to have:

  • A PhD in molecular biology, medicine, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on expertise with cell culture and molecular biology techniques (e.g., RNAseq)
  • High motivation, scientific curiosity, problem-solving skills, and independent initiative
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in written and spoken English

Nice to have:

  • Bioinformatic analysis experience (e.g., single-cell transcriptomics)
  • A background in atherosclerosis or vascular biology, particularly smooth muscle cell biology

Research environment

You will be based at the newly built research facilities of the Faculty of Health, SDU, in Odense, Denmark, within the Unit of Cardiovascular and Renal Research, part of the Department of Molecular Medicine. Here, you will join a vibrant, collaborative environment of Danish and international colleagues and students, fostering both scientific and social engagement.

As a member of the Steffensen group, you will contribute to research focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases. The SIF project is one of several complementary initiatives within the group, and we emphasize teamwork and synergy to achieve shared goals and support each other’s success.

Som projektleder hos Vores Elnet får du en vigtig rolle i vores digitaliseringsrejse. Du får ansvaret for at drive to større implementeringsprojekter med afsæt i vores centrale IT-systemer:

  • Field Service
  • MDM (Meter Data Management).

Du vil koordinere disse projekter og sikrer, at de gennemføres til tiden og med høj kvalitet. Samtidig sørger du for, at projekterne og deres udførelse leverer den forventede værdi for både afdelingen og organisationen ved at sikre en fuldendt implementering med alt hvad det indebærer. Din indsats bidrager således til at modernisere daglige arbejdsgange og skabe forbedringer for vores installationsejere i hele netområdet. Når systemerne er fuldt implementeret, overgår du til den daglige drift som proceskonsulent på systemerne. Her fungerer du som bindeled mellem forretningen og IT, hvor du med stærke samarbejdsevner og tydelig kommunikation sikrer, at både processer og løsninger bruges optimalt.

Dine ansvarsområder omfatter bl.a.:

  • Strategisk projektledelse: Planlægning, koordinering og implementering af de to ovenstående digitale projekter, som understøtter organisations digitale udvikling.
  • Procesoptimering: Kortlægning og udvikling af arbejdsgange og processer for at gøre dem mere effektive og sikre kvalitet
  • Proceskonsulent: Efter implementering af projekterne overgår du til driften som proceskonsulent, hvor du vil sikre vedligeholdelse og udvikling af processer i de to ovenstående systemer for forretningen.
  • Træning: Oplæring af kolleger i nye systemer og processer, så de hurtigt kan anvende dem i deres dagligdag.
  • Dokumentation og standardisering: Udarbejdelse af SOP’er (standard arbejdsinstruktioner) og sikring af, at viden fastholdes på tværs af organisationen.
