Do you want to do research on cutting-edge machine learning methods for climate modelling?
If you are establishing a career as a researcher in machine learning and are motivated to work with the latest generative models for climate modelling, we can offer you a strong foundation. We seek a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join our group at DTU Compute, offering a fully funded PhD scholarship (3-year employment) in a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.
The position is part of the research project “IcyAlert - Intelligent Climate Early Warning Alert for Arctic Ice-Free Summers
” , funded under the NNF Grand AI Challenge programme.
You will become part of an enthusiastic team working closely with collaborators at DMI (Danish Meteorological Institute) and RMI (Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium) to advance neural network-based methods for climate modelling.
About IcyAlert
The goal of the IcyAlert project is to provide robust predictions of Arctic ice-free summers at multi-seasonal time scales and their potential climate impacts under various warming scenarios, supporting sustainable climate solutions. Arctic summer sea ice extent has declined by nearly 13% per decade since 1979, accompanied by a 90% reduction of older ice. These changes pose increasing risks to ecosystems, food security, navigation, etc.
By combining dynamical models, satellite data, causal analysis, and explainable AI, IcyAlert will identify critical thresholds, enhance prediction accuracy, and generate automated alerts for seasonal Arctic and extratropical climate events. Using Gefion
in the project will be essential for analysing complex datasets and training advanced large-scale predictive models. This interdisciplinary initiative brings together experts in AI, climate modelling, and causal analysis to enhance preparedness for an ice-free Arctic.
Responsibilities and qualifications
This PhD project will focus on reducing uncertainties in Arctic sea-ice predictions. There will be three subprojects: 1) develop a climate data retrieval system in close collaboration with researchers at DMI and RMI. The pipeline is based on CMIP6, CMIP7, and C3S data. 2) develop generative AI models that can create high-resolution climate data based on low-resolution input, 3) develop probabilistic AI models to generate ensembles of Arctic winter initial states, which will be used as input to physical climate simulations to explore predictive relationships across warming scenarios.
You should have the following required skills:
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment

Generative AI (GenAI) is changing the ways writing, learning, and education unfold within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
On one hand, GenAI challenges traditional methods of learning and assessment, such as the take-home assignments or exams, which to a large extent can be delegated to GenAI technologies. On the other, GenAI tools such as chatbots and AI tutors are becoming embedded in everyday educational practices, altering how students read, write and learn, how educators teach, and how institutions assess and value student work. It is further an open question to what extent GenAI transforms STEM disciplines. How are expectations around expertise, critical thinking, creativity, and employability changing? And how do educational institutions navigate the balance between human and machine intelligence in shaping future learning environments?
This project invites theoretically and empirically grounded studies that contribute to understanding how GenAI is reconfiguring the practices, purposes, and values of writing, learning and teaching in STEM. Proposals may engage with one or more of the following themes:
Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate will conduct qualitative and organizational research examining how different stakeholders (students, faculty, managers, policymakers) interpret, adopt, resist, or institutionalize GenAI technologies in STEM in higher education. Experience with ethnographic or related qualitative methods is expected. Familiarity with theories from organization studies, science and technology studies (STS), sociology, education studies or related fields will be an asset.
The PhD will be supervised by Professor Helene Friis Ratner and conducted as part of the Algorithms, Data and Democracy project, founded by the VELUX Foundations. For more information, visit: www.algoritmer.org. The candidate will conduct teaching as part of the ph.d. programme.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

We are looking for an excellent PhD candidate with finite element, and possibly topology optimization expertise, for an exciting interdisciplinary project within design of additively manufactured ceramic fuel cells. The project shall develop design approaches that take manufacturing induced effects such as residual stresses, defects and edge roughness into account. The project is anchored at DTU Construct and funded by the Villum Investigator Project AMSTRAD granted by the Villum Foundation.
AMSTRAD is a six-year research project aimed at developing advanced numerical inverse design tools that allow for systematic investigations and design of materials and structures with disorder and defects, either by design or as introduced by non-perfect manufacturing processes.
Additive Manufacturing opens new frontiers in solid oxide fuel cell design by enabling architected geometries that merge structural integrity with electrochemical functionality. DTU Construct and DTU Energy have pioneered the concept of gyroidal fuel cells—monolithic architectures that drastically reduce weight while enhancing active surface area and mass transport. Building on this foundation, an active team of researchers is currently supported by external and internal funds such as the Villum P2X Accelerator Grant and DTU Rector’s Strategic Fund respectively. The present PhD project will work alongside this team to push the limits of both performance and manufacturability.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You shall develop advanced topology optimization frameworks that simultaneously minimize sintering-induced stresses and defects, maximize electrochemical activity, and ensure printability and robustness. The work bridges materials science, additive manufacturing and computational design, aiming to unlock the next generation of high-power, crack-resistant fuel cells and at the same time provide advance design concepts that take manufacturing uncertainties into account.
Your primary responsibilities will be to:
We are looking for a candidate with:
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
