PhD scholarship in single-cell multiomics in rare cell populations from liquid biopsies - DTU Bioengineering

Are you motivated by the potential of proteomics to uncover hidden biology? Do you want to map the proteomes of circulating tumour cells and reveal novel proteins with therapeutic and diagnostic potential? Join a collaborative PhD project at DTU Bioengineering focused on single-cell proteomics–based analysis of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC).

As part of the EU-funded MIPrecise network (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network), you will develop and apply advanced mass spectrometry and nano–liquid handling workflows to characterize individual tumour cells isolated from patient blood samples. The project builds on molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based probes developed by MIPrecise partners to selectively capture and fluorescently label CTCs, enabling precise isolation and downstream single-cell analysis. Using state-of-the-art Orbitrap mass spectrometry, automated sample preparation, and computational integration with transcriptomic data, you will identify protein signatures linked to tumour aggressiveness and metastasis and define multiomic biomarkers for improved cancer detection and patient stratification.

You will join the Cell Diversity Lab at DTU Bioengineering, led by Associate Professor Erwin M. Schoof, an international leader in single-cell proteomics, and collaborate closely with BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung), LNU (Linnaeus University), and UMU (Umeå University). The position offers extensive training in mass spectrometry, microfluidics, data analysis, and cancer biology within a vibrant, interdisciplinary European network dedicated to developing molecularly precise, sustainable diagnostic technologies.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop and apply single-cell proteomics workflows for the analysis of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. You will work closely with MIPrecise partners to implement and optimize molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based enrichment strategies, integrate advanced mass spectrometry and liquid handling automation, and analyze multiomic data to identify biomarkers of tumour aggressiveness and metastasis. The position combines hands-on experimental work with data-driven analysis and offers close collaboration across academia and industry.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop and optimize nano–liquid handling and single-cell proteomics workflows.
  • Perform sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis using Orbitrap-based mass spectrometry.
  • Collaborate with MIPrecise partners to integrate MIP-based CTC capture and fluorescence sorting.
  • Combine proteomic and transcriptomic data for multiomic biomarker discovery.
  • Document and communicate results through publications, presentations, and project meetings.
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial partners across Europe.
  • Participate in relevant courses, workshops, and training events within the MIPrecise network.

You must have:

  • A two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) (or equivalent) in biotechnology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, bioengineering, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Strong experimental skills in biochemistry, cell biology, or analytical workflows.
  • Interest in single-cell analysis, cancer biology, and translational research.
  • Basic level expertise in computational biology (e.g., bioinformatics, machine learning), with a strong willingness to advance these skill sets on biological data.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international, interdisciplinary team.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • A curiosity-driven mindset and enthusiasm for developing and applying cutting-edge technologies to address biomedical questions.
  • A proactive attitude towards learning and applying new skills.[HS1] [PN2] 

It would further be beneficial if you have some of the following skills:

  • Prior experience with mass spectrometry, proteomics, or microfluidics.
  • Experience with programming (Python preferred) for bioinformatics or data science applications.
  • Demonstrated track record with single-cell technologies (experimental and/or data analytics).

Are you passionate about tackling the impact of membrane solutions and their production and use impacts? At the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), we are offering a fully funded PhD position focused on understanding and mitigating the environmental and health impacts of advanced membranes for water and food industries. This research sits at the cutting edge of sustainable materials design, prospective life cycle assessment, and industrial innovation .

This PhD opportunity is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network UP2MEM, a European training network committed to advanced MEMbrane technologies for water and food industries. Through prospective LCA (pLCA), you will identify environmental hotspots and potential improvements, which will guide the choice of materials and energy sources as the project evolves. Application of the SIMPL approach ensures a discussion of how assumptions and key factors are considered when forecasting lab scale results, into full scale futures. Through inclusion of PESTLE and casual loop diagrams (CLD), non-engineering factors are included in the potential futures. The adoption of SIMPL will ensure that the full value chain of a future use of the membranes will be considered. Your research will directly support the transformation of the membrane sector toward safer, more sustainable practices, while equipping you with advanced interdisciplinary skills and international research experience.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As a PhD candidate, your work will support the adaptation the EU's SSbD methodology to the specific challenges posed by membrane materials. This will involve close collaboration with both academic researchers and industry experts across Europe.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct a Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (pLCA) to evaluate the environmental sustainability of new membrane solutions. 
  • Assess the environmental impact of membrane materials and processes throughout their life cycle, from production to End-of-Life, using approaches for future scenario integration. 
  • Evaluation of AQUAPORIN membranes as part of the industrial collaboration while extending environmental screening to more membranes considered within the consortium. 
  • Provide data driven insights to guide the development of eco-friendly membrane technologies.
  • Collaborating with fellow researchers across the UP2MEM  network
  • Participating in secondments at industry partners and conducting a research stay at partner University.

As a PhD candidate, your work will carry out prospective Life Cycle Assessment with consideration of the specific challenges posed by membranes and their production processes. This will involve close collaboration with both academic researchers and industry experts across Europe.

We consider the following qualifications advantageous:

  • Familiarity with LCA modelling, with consideration of mass and substance balances, data quality assessment, sensitivity and uncertainty assessment applied to membranes or similar products.
  • Experience with membranes and waste materials.
  • Prior experience in EU-funded or other international research collaborations.

As a person, you are creative, open-minded and can work independently, while also being pragmatic, curious and driven in your research. Collaboration is central to your work, and you bring strong social and team skills. You can communicate scientific topics clearly and effectively to both experts and non-specialists. Proficiency in English is required. 

You must be compliant with MSCA mobility rule: not have resided or carried out your main activity (work/study) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment.

PhD scholarship in Polymer Nanofiber Membrane from Recycled Membrane Waste Materials - DTU Sustain

At the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), we are offering a fully funded PhD position focused on a circular approach to membrane technologies – transforming membrane waste (after lifetime) into functional polymer nanofiber membranes for the water and food industries. This is a highly interdisplinary projects where the PhD student will learn and develop skills in sustainable material design, membrane technologies, prospective life cycle assessment, and industrial innovation .

This PhD opportunity is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network UP2MEM, a European training network committed to advanced MEMbrane technologies for water and food industries. Through combining material science and membrane processes, you will develop next-generation upcycling technology for the membrane industry. Moreover, you will be in close collaboration with other PhDs in the UP2MEM projects, e.g., PhDs at DTU working on prospective LCA to identify environmental hotspots and potential improvements, which will guide the choice of materials and energy sources as the project evolves.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As a PhD candidate, your work will provide technological solutions to the membrane industry on the sustainable upcycling of membrane waste. This will involve close collaboration with both academic researchers and industry experts across Europe.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct analysis of polymer membrane waste materials
  • Develop electrospinning methods to produce nanofiber membranes based on the polymer materials and structures.
  • Evaluate the membrane performance for water treatment and food production. 
  • Collaborate with the other PhD candidate at DTU Sustain in the UP2MEM project and provide inputs for a Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (pLCA) and evaluate the environmental sustainability of new membrane solutions. 
  • Collaborating with fellow researchers across the UP2MEM network
  • Participating in secondments at industry partners and conducting a research stay at partner University.

We consider the following qualifications advantageous:

  • Master's degree in the fields of material science and engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with polymer materials, membranes or waste materials.
  • Prior experience in EU-funded or other international research collaborations.
  • A proactive and independent work style.

PhD scholarship in switchable f-block–organic framework materials - DTU Chemistry

The f -elements of the periodic table play an essential role in numerous technologies, including catalysts, magnets, and photonic devices. Their distinct characteristics are intricately linked to the electronic configurations of the f -element ions, and any modifications in these configurations result in dramatic changes in their physical and chemical properties. The aim of the project is to bring about a paradigm shift in the design of switchable materials, by delving into the uncharted territory of f -element valence change (VC). The VC materials will be constructed using rigid metal-organic framework (MOF) structures, enabling them to exhibit rapid and cooperative responses to external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, and light. This conceptually new class of chameleonic materials exhibits prompt changes in magnetic, electronic, or optical properties upon stimuli and are promising candidates for applications in memory devices addressable by light, optoelectronics, and sensors. Likewise, the entangled nature of the photonic, electronic, and magnetic properties of the hypothesized materials may provide for entirely novel multifunctional materials, opening new horizons for advanced technologies.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new types of metal-organic network structures, which includes the detailed elucidation of atomic and electronic structures, and physical properties. The group is in possession of state-of-the-art diffraction instrumentation and single-crystal electron and X-ray crystallography, and the use of synchrotron facilities are central tools to the project. Furthermore, active dissemination of the obtained results, in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences, is an integral part of the job.

The collaborative project involves partners from the ESRF – The European Synchrotron and École Polytechnique.
The candidate should hold a MSc degree in chemistry with a strong focus on synthetic (inorganic) chemistry. Experience with handling and manipulation of air- and moisture sensitive compounds and crystallography are considered advantageous. The candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious, and seek to do science at the highest international level.

PhD scholarship in advanced electrochemical diagnostics of redox flow battery reactors - DTU Energy

We are looking for a motivated and creative candidate to fill a position as a PhD student as part of the MSCA Doctoral Network “SPACER” (Shaping Porous Electrode Architecture to Improve Current Density and Energy Efficiency in Redox Flow Batteries). SPACER aims to develop new architectures for porous electrodes to improve the power density and energy efficiency of redox flow batteries (RFB), enabling affordable and durable long-duration energy storage. The approach is to use hierarchical structures, i.e., complex material layers that can be optimized to specific battery chemistries and flow phenomena from the microscale up. The developed technologies will be validated in half-cells and full working batteries at industrial partners at TRL 6.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your task will be to use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and other complimentary characterisation techniques to provide holistic and detailed performance characterisation of new hierarchical porous carbon electrodes developed in the network. You will leverage advanced data analysis methods such as Distribution of Diffusion Times to obtain insight into mass transfer and microstructural effects in the new generation of electrodes. The project will be carried out in collaboration with network partners, requiring 3-6 months of secondments abroad.

You will have the opportunity to work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team of 17 doctoral candidates, based at universities and industrial firms throughout Europe. You will be supported by two mentors within the SPACER project and will have multiple opportunities to participate in professional and personal development training. Through your work you will gain a unique skill set at the interface between modelling and prototyping of electrode materials, including characterization of electrodes using spectroscopical and electrochemical techniques at different levels from micro-scale to macro-scale. 

You are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and to disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at international conferences.

In accordance with the European Union’s funding rules for doctoral networks, applicants must NOT yet have a PhD.

You must have:

  • A Master’s degree and/or BSc degrees in Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines.
  • An aptitude for experimental research and data analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are prerequisites.

Additionally, experience with programming and/or mathematical modelling is an advantage.

Within the project “Silicon carbide photonic integrated circuit (SiCPIC)”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No.  101227010 , at DTU Electro, the Technical University of Denmark, we are seeking a candidate for a PhD position to research integrated diode laser system on SiC on insulator (SiCOI) platform for application in nonlinear as well as quantum optics.

The PhD student will participate in an international team, consisting of 15 PhD students at 5 universities and one company. The project has partners from five different EU countries. All, 15 PhD projects are within the overall theme of SiCOI devices and integration for applications in classic and quantum optical telecommunication, and optical sensing. 

This PhD project will take place at DTU Electro. Apart from the time at DTU there will be secondments of 4 months at Accelink, Denmark and at Swiss PIC, Switzerland. There will also be common meetings with the other 14 PhD students in the doctoral network, including 3 training schools. 

As a participant of the project, the PhD student will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in design, fabrication and characterization of integrated diode laser systems. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other PhD projects in the SiCPIC project as well as with other activities at the department, especially with the activities in Wide Bandgap Semiconductor group headed by Assoc. Prof. Haiyan Ou. The main supervisor will be Senior researcher Mingjun Chi, the co-supervisor will be Assoc. Prof. Haiyan Ou, DTU Electro.

Responsibilities and tasks 
Thanks to the unique photonic properties and physical properties of SiC, versatile devices could be achieved on the SiC material platform. For example, SiC possesses both high second-order and third-order nonlinearity, the former enables frequency doubling, electro-optical modulators (switches) and the latter enables optical frequency comb (OFC). More importantly, large size SiC wafers enable the integration of different functional components on SiCOI platform, providing novel solutions for compactness and low power consumption, which has never been demonstrated on other material platforms before.

So far, most of the pump sources for photonic devices based on SiCOI are fiber lasers, making the total system bulky and expensive. This project aims to integrate diode laser pump sources with passive SiCOI photonic devices to achieve compact integrated diode laser systems with different functions. The project will among others consist of the following tasks:

  • Design different integrated laser systems consisted of diode lasers and photonic devices based on SiCOI;
  • Fabricate the photonic devices based on SiCOI with different functions, such as tunability, spectrum narrowing, and integrate them with pump diode laser;
  • Character, optimize and evaluate the performance for the integrated laser system

SiCPIC PhD student 

Qualifications

The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Assoc. Responsibilities and tasks 
Thanks to the unique photonic properties and physical properties of SiC, versatile devices could be achieved on the SiC material platform.   • Study different mechanics to align the output of OFCs and working wavelengths of AWGs, and apply them correspondingly for different applications;
  • Evaluate different SiCOI materials;
  • Fabricate SiCOI devices using CMOS compatible processing;
  • Integrate different devices monolithically on SiCOI;
  • Character, optimize and evaluate the performance of devices and circuits for the later prototyping and applications.

SiCPIC PhD student

This PhD project will take place at DTU Electro. Apart from the time at DTU there will be secondments of 6 months in total at Accelink Denmark and Politecnico Di Torino, Italy. There will also be common meetings with the other 14 PhD students in the doctoral network, including 3 training schools. 

As a participant of the project, the PhD student will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in digital signal processing methods, and machine learning methods for amplitude and phase noise characterization of optical frequency combs, recovery of dual-comb measurement signals and various phase demodulation techniques. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Professor Darko Zibar, DTU Electro.

Responsibilities and tasks 
Research into novel methods for noise characterization and stabilization of SiC optical frequency combs. Research on integration of SiC combs in optical communication and sensing system.  The overall goal will be to devise strategies for quantum noise limited performance. Specifically, you will focus on the following areas:

  • Subspace tracking and autoencoders for amplitude and phase noise characterization 
  • Bayesian filtering 
  • Building experimental set-ups for noise characterization
  • Reinforcement learning strategies for comb generation 
  • Optical communication and fibre-sensing experiments
  • Maintenance of the GitHub repository for the developed code 
  • Organizing and managing joint experiments with the collaboration groups

SiCPIC PhD student 

Qualifications
Candidates must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in photonics or electrical engineering or applied physics or similar. Experience with machine learning, digital signal processing and experimental work is a plus.

Further obligations : The doctoral candidate (DC) is expected to travel to network partners under two secondments for a typical total duration of 6 months. Additionally, the DC is expected to participate in outreach activities including, but not limited to, YouTube videos, social media updates, participation in public events and campaigns, as well as dissemination to popular press. Furthermore, due to the mobility rules of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.

Within the project “Silicon carbide photonic integrated circuit (SiCPIC)”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No.  101227010 , at DTU Electro, the Technical University of Denmark, we are seeking a candidate for a PhD position to research generation of optical quantum states, specifically photon pairs and entangled photon states in waveguide devices based on silicon carbide material. The overall aim is to demonstrate devices for application in quantum communication.

The PhD student will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called SiCPIC. The project consists of 15 PhD students at 5 universities and one company. The project has partners from five different EU countries. All 15 PhD projects are within the overall theme of Silicon carbide on insulator (SiCOI) devices and integration for applications in classic and quantum optical telecommunication, and optical sensing. 

This PhD project will take place at DTU Electro. The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Professor Karsten Rottwitt, DTU Electro.

Responsibilities and tasks 
Research into generation of photon pairs and entangled photons, using four wave mixing. The overall goal is to design and characterize waveguide devices and establish necessary theoretical background. Focus on the following areas:

  • Design and characterization of photon pair sources in simple waveguide devices
  • Optimization of waveguides for photon pair sources
  • Design and characterization of sources of entangled quantum states.
