The position is combined with a 10-year position as Clinical Professor (Chair) in Neurology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position, the Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment to both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the Department

The Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury is part of the Neuroscience Centre at Rigshospitalet and is located at the Bodil Eskesen Centre in Glostrup. The department provides highly specialized and regional neurorehabilitation services for patients from Eastern Denmark as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The department encompasses highly specialized and regional neurorehabilitation after traumatic and non-traumatic acquired brain injury, comprehensive rehabilitation and long-term follow-up of patients with spinal cord injury, and integrated interdisciplinary care pathways involving physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and social workers. Selected patient groups are followed in structured, lifelong outpatient programmes.

The department maintains close collaboration with neurointensive, neurological and neurosurgical units, as well as with municipalities and regional partners, ensuring continuity across acute treatment, rehabilitation and long-term management. Clinical care, research and education are closely integrated.

As part of its strategic development, the department has invested in digital health, welfare technology and robotics, including collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in relation to technology-supported rehabilitation models and data-driven clinical solutions.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The consultant will work within and contribute to the continued development of neurorehabilitation services across both brain injury and spinal cord injury pathways.

The position includes responsibility for complex rehabilitation trajectories requiring advanced neurological expertise and interdisciplinary coordination. The consultant will contribute to strengthening clinical pathways from early neurocritical phases to long-term follow-up.

Close collaboration with neurointensive, neurological and neurosurgical services is essential, as is ongoing cooperation with municipalities and other healthcare sectors. The consultant will participate in referral processes, capacity planning and strategic development of rehabilitation services.

Supervision and bedside clinical teaching of medical students, residents and other physicians in training is an integrated part of the clinical function. The consultant will be expected to contribute to administrative and organizational tasks. Potential participation in on-call duties will be agreed upon at the time of employment

The consultant will report to the Head of Department and will be a member of the department’s management group.

Research and teaching

With this new position, the Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury wishes to strengthen clinical research and academic development in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialists in Neurology.

Conditions

Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region and the University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor, at least 50% of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated to clinical work in agreement with the Head of Department.

Additional support and details on working conditions must be negotiated with the Head of Department.

About the department

The Department provides neurophysiological services for all public hospitals and the primary medical sector in the Capital region of Copenhagen (population 1,8 mil). The Department is placed in 3 main locations, and smaller satellite units in the area, with a total staff of approximately 125 persons including 2 professors and 19 specialist doctors. The Department is further organized in 3 sections: EEG, EMG/EP and sleep medicine.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The consultant will have the opportunity to work within or take responsibility for one (or more) of our clinical subspecialty areas, depending on specific research interests and on clinical experience. The consultant will be expected to contribute to the clinical and scientific development of clinical neurophysiology.

Research at an international level is performed in all areas of the Department. Main research areas are: nerve and muscle excitability, nerve regeneration, sleep disorders and EEG in coma and epilepsy surgery.

The Department wishes to further strengthen research at all levels including basic research areas such as pathophysiological mechanisms, signal analysis and input to software development performed by staff engineers. We wish to further develop and implement neurophysiological methods strategically aimed at meeting present and future needs of clinicians and patients in this field.



Supervision and teaching of medical students, residents and other physicians in training is an integrated part of the clinical function. The consultant will be expected to contribute to administrative and organizational tasks. The consultant will report to the head of department and will be a member of the management group in the department.

About the department

The Department of Neurology at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet serves patients with neurological diseases from the Copenhagen Area, and from other parts of Denmark, as well as the Faroe Islands and Greenland, at two sites: Rigshospitalet-Glostrup (Valdemar Hansens Vej) and Rigshospitalet-Blegdamsvej in Copenhagen.

The department has in- patient wards for critical care neurology, stroke (offering thrombolysis and endovascular treatment) and multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation (in collaboration with Department of Neurorehabilitation). We have specialized out-patient clinics for multiple sclerosis, headache, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disorders, dementia, movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and general neurology. Certified by the Danish Health Authority, we offer highly specialized treatments within most neurological subspecialties and have access to advanced neuroimaging, clinical neurophysiology, nuclear medicine, and clinical genetics.

The department is the home of several advanced clinical and translational research centers. We provide pre- and postgraduate teaching and training for medical doctors and other health care professionals.
