PhD scholarship in Leveraging Maintenance with Data: Applying Modular Maintenance in Asset-Heavy Industries - DTU Construct

Are you ready to use data and engineering to change how industries manage complex systems?

Responsibilities and qualifications 
Your overall focus will be to develop new approaches to modular, data-driven maintenance in asset-heavy industries. You will explore how maintenance can move from being a cost driver to a source of competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability. Working closely with both academic supervisors and industry partners, you will bridge theory and practice to create research with real-world impact.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Conduct research on data-driven and modular approaches to maintenance
  • Collect and analyze industrial case data in energy, manufacturing, or process sectors
  • Develop conceptual and computational models linking operations and maintenance
  • Validate frameworks in collaboration with industrial partners
  • Publish findings in leading journals and present at international conferences
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc student projects

We are looking for candidates who hold a master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering, industrial management, or a related field. You should have a strong interest in maintenance, operations, data modeling, or lifecycle engineering. Solid analytical skills and experience with either quantitative or qualitative research methods are essential. We value individuals who can collaborate effectively with both industry and academia, while also being able to work independently. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are required.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for thePhD education.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by an expert committee appointed by DTU Construct. The committee will evaluate candidates based on academic qualifications, research potential, and their ability to contribute to both the scientific and industrial objectives of the project.

PhD scholarship in Sustainable Photochemical PFAS Destruction - DTU Sustain

If you are eager to advance sustainable water treatment technologies and contribute to solving one of the world’s most persistent environmental challenges, this position is for you.

At DTU Sustain, you will work at the forefront of environmental engineering and photochemical technology, developing innovative solutions for the degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). You will gain hands-on experience with advanced analytical tools, reactor design, and reaction kinetics, skills that will prepare you for a future career in academia, research, or the water industry.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to advance the development of a sustainable photochemical reduction process for PFAS mineralization using a green reducing agent. You will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team in Water Technology and Processes section at DTU Sustain, combining environmental engineering, photochemistry, electrochemistry and process optimization to achieve safer and more efficient PFAS destruction.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Design and conduct laboratory-scale UV photochemical experiments
  • Investigate the photochemistry and reaction kinetics of novel reducing agents 
  • Evaluate PFAS degradation pathways, defluorination efficiency, and byproduct formation
  • Optimize operating parameters to enhance process performance and robustness
  • Integrate the developed process with existing PFAS treatment technologies
  • Analyze samples using advanced chemical and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., LC-MS, IC, TOC)
  • Disseminate findings through scientific publications and conference presentations

We are looking for a candidate who have a strong experimental background in water treatment, photochemistry, or chemical reaction engineering. Experience with analytical chemistry techniques for contaminant detecting and quantification is essential. A good command of both written and spoken English is required, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary research team.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

About the position 
As Innovation Officer for National Security Technologies, you will play a central role in fostering partnerships between DTU’s research environments and Danish SMEs. You will help identify promising technologies, coordinate innovation activities, and support companies in bringing new solutions to market. 

You will join a dynamic team spanning DTU Compute and DTU Space, and work closely with experts across academia, industry, and public institutions to accelerate the path from research to real-world application. 

Your key responsibilities

  • Drive collaboration between DTU researchers and SMEs on technology development and commercialization. 
  • Organize innovation sprints, matchmaking events, and proof-of-concept processes that link research and industry needs.
  • Support technology transfer and dual-use innovation (civil and security applications). 
  • Facilitate business development activities, including funding workshops and go-to-market planning.
  • Contribute to communication and outreach, including presenting SME success stories at events such as Digital Tech Summit. 
  • Document and share learnings that strengthen Denmark’s capacity for cross-sector innovation.

Your qualifications
You are motivated by creating impact through collaboration. You thrive in an interdisciplinary environment and enjoy connecting people, ideas, and technologies.

We expect that you:

  • Hold a relevant academic degree (e.g. in innovation management, engineering, business development, or political science).
  • Have experience with innovation projects, SME engagement, or public–private partnerships.
  • Bring knowledge of or interest in technology commercialization, dual-use innovation, or security technologies.
  • Communicate effectively and build trust across diverse stakeholders.
  • Have excellent communication skills in English (Danish is an advantage).

Experience from university innovation environments, incubators, or industry clusters will be considered an asset.

DTU har mange tusinde forskningsprojekter finansieret af både danske og internationale bevillingsgivere, herunder EU, hver med deres egne økonomiske krav. Kompleksiteten er stigende, og behovet for fortolkning og ensartet praksis er større end nogensinde.

Derfor søger vi dig til en udvidelse af teamet.

Du bliver en del af Analyse og Fortolkning, et centralt team i DTU’s centrale økonomiafdeling, der løser komplekse fortolknings- og analyseopgaver i tæt dialog med interessenter på tværs af DTU. Teamet er med til at skabe overblik, sikre ensartet praksis og hjælpe kolleger med at navigere i bevillingsgivernes regler – hvad enten det handler om krav til rapportering, dokumentation eller at bistå ved bevillingsgiveres revisioner.

Jobbet 
Din hovedopgave er at sikre, at DTU’s interne regler understøtter compliance med bevillingsgivernes krav, og at formidle reglerne tydeligt til forskere, administratorer og projektøkonomer.

Du vil blandt andet:

  • forberede og medvirke ved bevillingsgiveres eksterne revisioner af udvalgte projekter
  • udvikle og standardisere dokumentationskrav til revisioner
  • undersøge og fortolke regler for nye og eksisterende bevillingsgivere
  • rådgive kolleger, så regler håndteres ensartet på tværs af DTU
  • skabe overblik over modtagne bevillinger og tilhørende krav
  • analysere efterlevelse og foreslå løsninger, hvor der er udfordringer
  • holde dig opdateret på en portefølje af centrale bevillingsgivere og formidle ændringer via intranet, vejledninger og undervisning

Responsibilities and qualifications
You should be passionate about software development and supporting IT production systems. You will be responsible for: 

  • Developing and implementing key features, both in the backend and in the front end. 
  • Integrating applications with databases, APIs and third-party services.
  • Diagnosing, debugging, and resolving problems in a production environment.
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Training and managing part-time (student worker) developers.

Are you passionate about low-carbon cement and advanced cementitious materials characterization? We’re looking for a full-time PhD to join the Digital Building Technology (DBT) section at DTU, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct). 

In this role, you are advancing innovation by integrating material science, advanced processing techniques, and modelling to gain a comprehensive understanding of calcium carbonate formation & growth at environmental boundary conditions of cementitious materials, across different scales and timeframes. This position plays a crucial role in our DFF-Sapere Aude project, PolYCEM, supported by Independent Research Fund Denmark, dedicated to developing "Metastable calcium carbonate cement toward cultivating carbon neutrality." Join our team and contribute to the field of cement research.

Responsibilities
Your main focus will be to study how cement-based materials undergo carbonation and how the carbonated phases interact with cementitious phases under different atmospheric conditions. You will work directly with advanced laboratory equipment and computational modeling tools (e.g., thermodynamic modelling and life cycle analysis) to investigate carbonation and phase changes at both micro and macro scales.

  • Conduct experimental work on the formulation and optimization of calcium carbonate–rich cementitious materials.
  • Characterizing the fresh and hardened properties of the cementitious materials over time using techniques such as rheological characterization, SEM, XRD, µCT, TGA, Raman imaging, and multiscale mechanical testing. 
  • Thermodynamic modelling. 
  • Close collaboration with the rest of our interdisciplinary team, particularly the PolYCEM Postdoc in “Metastable calcium carbonate cement”.
  • Dissemination of your research through publications in “top rank journals of the field” and attendance to conferences.
  • Research and teaching efforts at a section and departmental level as appropriate and relevant (e.g., teach and supervise MSc/BSc student projects).

Qualifications

  • Background within building materials, material science, inorganic chemistry or related fields. 
  • Experience in microstructural testing of cementitious materials is a great plus.

Flexibility is essential. We are looking for a team player who can also work independently, who is motivated to help and be part of a dynamic research environment; and who has a positive, supportive and creative outlook. We expect you to have good communication and personal interaction skills and to have excellent communication skills in English.

PhD scholarship in Sustainable Packaging Manufacturing Using Natural Fiber Networks - DTU Construct

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct) of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an open PhD position on the topic of “Sustainable Packaging Manufacturing Using Natural Fiber Networks”.

The position is funded in the context of the project HiProBio co-funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. You will be working in the framework of the ongoing collaboration between DTU Construct, DTU Chemical Engineering and Danish as well as international companies with the goal of implementing solutions for the development of compostable, recyclable and renewable natural fiber-based packaging. This position offers unique opportunities with respect to high level research, training and innovation within manufacturing engineering, sustainability and circularity, in an exciting combination of academic and industrial environments. The selected candidate will receive strong guidance from academic supervisors as well as from industrial experts. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD position is focused on the development of high-speed dry thermoforming processes for air-laid mats composed of natural fibers derived from locally sourced agricultural waste. The project aims to enable efficient and sustainable production of packaging components suitable for food and beverage applications.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of a dry thermoforming process and associated lab-scale machinery tailored to selected bio-based fiber network materials. Key research activities include:

  • Development of machine concepts and forming tools
  • Thermoforming process optimization
  • Integration of vision systems and control algorithms for in-line process and quality monitoring
  • Data-driven process adaptation to accommodate varying fiber types and base material properties

The project will utilize a combination of existing and newly developed equipment to achieve targeted part properties while minimizing cycle time. Industrial validation will be conducted in collaboration with partner companies.

The position involves both theoretical and experimental work, with responsibilities spanning project execution and academic dissemination. You are expected to: position the scientific work within the context of current literature. Furthermore, you are expected to publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences.

We are looking for candidates with an excellent academic background in production engineering or related fields. Strong knowledge of manufacturing systems, machine elements, press systems, and process monitoring is essential. Experience with manufacturing metrology and programming tools such as MATLAB is highly valued, and familiarity with Machine Learning techniques is considered a strong asset. Candidates should also possess good analytical skills and communication abilities in English.

You should have completed a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in Mechanical, Production, Materials, Industrial or Robotics Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.

Løn og ansættelsesvilkår
Løn- og ansættelsesvilkår i henhold til LC/CO10-fællesoverenskomsten og organisationsaftale for IT-medarbejdere (Prosa) i statens tjeneste. 

Arbejdstiden vil være ca. 15 timer om ugen. Er du studerende, kan den tilpasses dit skema og eksamensperioder. 

Vi ønsker at du kan starte hurtigst muligt. 

Arbejdsstedet er DTU Lyngby campus.
