Join Us in Empowering Actions to Shape Tomorrow's Resilience – as part-time Researcher

Sønderborg

The Department of Business and Sustainability, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for one or more positions as part-time assistant professor for up to four years as of April 1, 2026, or as agreed.

The department is organized around eight research units and centers, and we have activities at three campuses in Kolding, Esbjerg, and Sønderborg  For the open positions we are interested in applicants for our European Center for Risk & Resilience Studies located at Campus Sønderborg.

Shape the Future of Resilience - Not Just Study It

You will be part of the European Center for Risk & Resilience Studies, where we don’t just observe complexity - we design clarity. We believe the future of global stability depends on how we understand and act on risk. That’s why we’re building the intellectual infrastructure to do just that.

We’re launching a new research pillar focused on Supply Chain Risk. To succeed, we invite researchers with a passion for rethinking how resilience is built across systems, sectors, and societies to apply. This is your opportunity to help architect the next generation of risk intelligence, not as a technician, not as a theorist, but as a thought leader whose ideas move markets, shape policy, and redefine how organizations prepare for the unknown.

We’re offering two part-time research positions (approx. 18–20 hours/week, with flexibility across the year) for professionals who are already shaping the industry and now want to advance thought leadership to shape the future of research and supply chain resilience.

What You’ll Do

You’ll help build the intellectual foundation that doesn’t just model risk, but redefines how the world understands it, through:

  • Author or co-author publications that set the standard for what risk intelligence should be.

  • Collaborate with a global ecosystem of thinkers, builders, and decision-makers.

  • Staying in industry, and bring its reality into the heart of academia, ensuring our work is grounded, relevant, and transformative.

  • Supporting the growth of a movement, helping us raise capital, build partnerships, and shape the narrative that will make this center the global thought leader in Risk & Resilience by 2030.

Who you’ll join

The department’s main teaching activities are related to the bachelor’s program in Economics and Business Administration (HA) and several profiles in the master’s program in Economics and Business Administration (cand.merc). We are currently developing a new profile on supply chain management to be taught in Sønderborg. You will be involved in this work, and you will be part of the teaching team. We also run a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and contribute to several other study programs at SDU. We highly prioritize engagement and quality in the study programs and the study environment at our three campuses.

The department strongly encourages collaboration between colleagues across the department and the university. The perhaps most obvious possibilities for such collaborations count our own department’s research group on “Supply Chain and Technology Management” and the new “Center of Supply Chain Digitalization” situated in Sønderborg at the Faculty of Engineering.

Your new colleagues

Your colleagues in the department are experienced academics with a broad academic skillset in diverse fields and disciplines. We strive for academic excellence, and your colleagues are embedded in strong international research networks and projects. The department prioritizes cross-disciplinary work, and most colleagues engage in research projects and/or study programs that are based on active collaboration with colleagues from other areas of social sciences and beyond. We apply qualitative and quantitative methods and have a long tradition of strong engagement with external partners in the private and public sector. Moreover, we take pride in didactical innovation and the offering of relevant study programs of the highest quality.

The Department of Business and Sustainability offers a dynamic and entrepreneurial work environment in which collaboration and team spirit are fundamental parts of the culture.

Who are we looking for?

You’re not just applying for a job. You’re answering a call to build something that matters. We’re looking for experienced professionals who want to take their expertise further—by shaping the future of risk intelligence through research. You’ve spent years solving real-world problems. You understand how systems behave under pressure, how decisions are made in uncertainty, and how resilience is built—not just modelled. Now, you want to contribute to the frameworks and ideas that will define the next decade of risk and resilience. We imagine that you have deep professional experience working in complex environments—such as risk management, underwriter, procurement or supply chain strategy, resilience consulting, systems design or analytics, or strategic decision-making under uncertainty.

You’ll be tasked with a range of obligations in the department:

  • Perform academic citizenship locally and globally, e.g. engaging in the local campus environment, arranging seminars and workshops, and taking on minor admin. tasks in the department

To qualify for the position, you’re expected to document:

  • Relevant professional industry experience

  • A relevant PhD degree (economics, business administration, computer science, systems engineering, applied mathematics, actuarial science or a closely related discipline)

  • Ability to formulate an ambitious and credible research plan for the coming years

  • A strong grasp of quantitative risk modeling, systems thinking, or applied analytics

  • Experience with conference/workshop participation and ability to engage in professional networks.

  • Experience with communication science outside of academia

  • Fluency in English (the working language of the center)

For a more detailed description of the qualification criteria, please consult the department’s Scholarly Qualification Guidelines

It is important that applicants have good interpersonal skills and are dedicated to taking part in the everyday professional and social environment in the department. Such engagement can be documented by, for example, past engagement in social and professional activities. Within a three-year period, applicants with no current Danish skills must master the language at a level which enables them to read Danish exam papers and administrative documents (free language courses will be offered).

The department believes in fostering a stimulating and inspiring environment for both staff members and students. Therefore, the department’s ambition is to recruit, develop, and retain talented scholars committed to both academic excellence and departmental development. Furthermore, the department wishes the staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

PhD Position in Multi-level Material Cycles and Market Dynamics

Odense

Do you want to be part of the circular revolution to rethink the way we value the built environment? Join us as a fully-funded PhD in the MSCA doctoral network QuiVal- Quantum Inspired Valuation of Circular Real Estate (https://quival-research.eu/ ).

The SDU Life Cycle Engineering at the Department of Green Technology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a Fully Funded three-year PhD in multi-level material cycles and market dynamics, in the MSCA Doctoral Network QuiVal, where we learn, ideate and reimagine real estate value and valuation practices by drawing inspiration from quantum theories.

The position is is available from March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project overview

In order to make our cities more circular, we need to fundamentally revisit the way that we define and quantify the value of our built environment. This fully funded PhD project is part of a Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Doctoral Network, QuiVal, a programme funded by the European Union with the aim to develop a fundamentally new approach to real estate valuation, allowing the sector to rapidly transition towards a more sustainable, low carbon and circular future. This will be achieved through a transdisciplinary PhD training programme across 8 universities and 14 industry partners, and including 13 PhD students who will work, together and separately, to rethink the philosophy, principles and processes of valuation.

The programme is transdisciplinary and co-produced by leading academics and practitioners who are passionate and knowledgeable about the real estate industry and about sustainability. Five objectives have been developed through which to achieve the aim, and each PhD project will respond to one of these objectives.

PhD Topic Description

The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark is part of the response to the third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. The valuation of building materials is crucial, and complex because of the volatility of building material markets.

This project will explore how the material cycles (e.g., production, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management) and market dynamics (e.g., demand and supply of scrap in the building and non-building sectors) will affect the value of demounted building material. For example, fast-growing steel scrap from the transport sector will influence the supply and thus market economics of building steel recycling.

This project will develop a holistic assessment framework considering the synergy between the building sector and other sectors based on full material cycles and market dynamics. This approach will be used for key representative building materials (e.g., steel, copper, timber, and aggregates) used in the construction sector to identify the most feasible and sustainable material recovery pathways.

This project aims at developing a holistic method to assess and identify the recycling and reuse pathways of building materials considering the full material cycles and market dynamics. Incorporating quantum-inspired methodologies will enable a more nuanced understanding of the probabilistic and interconnected nature of market dynamics and material cycles. As well as a dissertation, and a number of academic papers, the project will produce an accessible report for real estate professionals.

The PhD student will spend the majority of the funded three years at University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, but will also be funded for two periods on secondment to QuiVal partners, one to industry partner Circue and the other to university partner University of West England in Bristol, United Kingdom. There will also be significant opportunities for sharing knowledge and fostering discussions with the other 12 PhD students, through five workshops and three summer schools.

The PhD students will also work together to collect data and collaborate with stakeholders including a network of industry frontrunners who are partners in the programme, increasing understanding, research impact, and chances of employment in the real estate and related sectors.

What we expect
You will be embedded in the QuiVal community. For your role in research project 3b, we are looking for a PhD student who has:

  • An MSc degree in a relevant field such as computer science, data science, industrial ecology, environmental management, sustainable design, with a focus on resource management & recycling and environmental sustainability.

  • Proficiency in English speaking, reading and writing.

  • Strong analytical and methodological skills, with proven experience in one of the following: material flow analysis (MFA), system dynamics (SD), life cycle assessment (LCA), tech-economic analysis, accounting and evaluation (preferred).

  • Strong communication skills with experience in scientific writing and presenting research to diverse audiences.

  • Able to lead in research and involve the research team and industrial partners in knowledge co-creation and sharing activities.

  • Creativity and openness to designing and applying innovative research approaches for circular economy challenges are considered a benefit!

  • A strong motivation for research and the ability to work persistently on complex challenges are considered assets.

This vacancy follows the recruitment procedures of QuiVal, which are set up in compliance to the MSCA doctoral network recruitment rules from the European Commission, most notably the mobility and eligibility of the Doctoral Candidates:

  • Candidates may not have a PhD degree.

  • Candidates must have not lived in Denmark for at least 2 years out of last 3 years.

SDU Life Cycle Engineering
The successful candidates will be affiliated with the SDU Life Cycle Engineering, which is acknowledged for its unique research on global, holistic, and systems integration of agriculture, energy, and materials sectors. PhD Position in Automated Mapping and Identification of Large Structure Environments

Odense

SDU Center for Large Structure Production (LSP), part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute (MMMI), at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a fully funded PhD position on the topic of automated mapping and identification of large structure environments. The position will be vacant from 1 January 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a 3-year period. Main work location is Odense Denmark at SDU campus and Odense Havn (Odense Port).

Work environment

The candidate will be part of SDU Center for Large Structure Production (LSP). LSP’s central ambition is to provide a physical “go-to” lab for companies in the sectors construction, maritime, and energy to carry out research, development, and testing of novel solutions in the production of large structures, such as buildings, ships and offshore platforms. In this context, the candidate is expected to work closely with our academic and industrial partners on application-oriented methods and technologies, with the support of the unique set of equipment of the center.

LSP is closely working together the companies at Odense Havn and similar partners making large structures across Denmark and Europe. LSP is integrated with the Odense Robotics Cluster involving startups and established companies in robotics. We are a team of currently about 20 researchers, engineers and PhD students, specialized in robot solutions involving modelling, simulation, and control of advanced robot technologies (systems and services) for application-oriented industrial applications.

Our group is involved in a variety of national and European projects and features a strong network of academic and industrial partners. We value teamwork, professional diligence, enthusiasm for robotics and the drive to adopt new skills and extended responsibilities. We offer an open, international team, with flexible work organization and support for individual development.

Job description

Building and infrastructures at their end of life are today dismantled without much care about potential extraction of recyclable materials – due to the costs of more careful (and manual) deconstruction procedures as well as the lack of automated solutions to reduce such additional costs. To address this situation, the PhD position will focus on the development of methods and technologies to increasingly support cost-efficient material extraction from the careful disassembly of buildings and infrastructures.

In particular, the PhD candidate will address the aspect of mapping and identification of large structure environments. For operating automated equipment in large structure environment, it is necessary to have access to a map of its topology, which may be based on BIM data (if existent) and floor plans or must be generated from collecting and interpreting 3D point clouds. Specifically for the purpose of deconstruction and material extraction, such a map needs to additionally contain the identification of valuable materials for extraction as well as extraction strategies depending on their location and consequences from their extraction (e.g. basic structural robustness).

The PhD position is part of the project “Civil Engineering and the Green Transition in the Built Environment” (CEBE) donated by the Villum Foundation and will thus be embedded in other research and development activities at SDU and other Danish universities, and it will be interdisciplinary, with interfaces and interactions to civil engineering and other engineering disciplines.

Profile and requirements

The candidate is expected to have most of the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, preferably supported by first academic publications

  • Documented experience with simulation and Digital Twins

  • Strong mathematics skills and practical knowledge in 3D modelling

  • Strong programming skills (particularly in C/C++ and Python)

  • Documented knowledge in industrial robotics and kinematics

  • Ability to work independently as part of an agile team, with a strong sense of responsibility

  • Willingness to engage in application-oriented R&D, by closely interacting with partners

Contact information

For further information, please contact Professor Christian Schlette via email (chsch@mmmi.sdu.dk) or on LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/in/christian-schlette/).
