Declaration of interest regarding PhD project in Neurology

Odense

The Department of Neurology, Department of Clinical Institute, SDU/Odense University Hospital and Neurobiology Research, Department of Molecular Medicine at SDU and are looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of Neurology.

We are looking for a person with a relevant degree in Medicine (MD).

Research environment

In our laboratory we are studying cardiometabolic diseases (MetSy), such as stroke to try to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to impaired functional outcome.

We have one main research objective, which is to study the neuro-inflammatory response that occurs following ischemic stroke with the aim of contributing to the development of novel therapies to improve outcome for stroke patients.

We work closely with clinical translational research labs on neurovascular disease. This is a joint project with Dept. of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, where part of the project will take place.

Project description

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Early reperfusion and admission for stroke unit care are imperative to improve the final clinical outcome. However, this re-establishment is only offered to approximately 20% of all patients in Denmark.

The induced ischemia initiates a cascade of complex responses that may lead to chronic inflammation. In this project, we aim to pave the way for a paradigm shift in IS treatment, centered on the vision that active resolution of post-stroke inflammation and improved remyelination processes can be obtained by blocking detrimental and boosting pro-regenerative inflammatory processes.

We will characterize the sex-specific effects of MetSy on post-ischemic stroke recovery in human ischemic stroke cases and help identify promising therapeutic compounds to improve functional outcomes in ischemic stroke cases with MetSy-related comorbidities.

The PhD candidate is expected to work on investigating how sex-dependent low-grade systemic inflammation caused by MetSy affects neurological outcome in IS patients. This will be performed in clinical cohorts, using clinical and paraclinical data and performing analyses on sex-specific correlations between metabolic biomarkers in the blood and cognitive scores, as wells as between biomarkers and MRI evaluations of lesion size and edema formation.

Qualifications

The candidate must hold a degree in Medicine, be within 1-2 years after MD graduation.

Danish authorization as an MD is a prerequisite and the applicant must be fluent in reading and speaking Danish.

The candidate is expected to fulfil the criteria for enrolment as a Ph.D. student at the University of Southern Denmark. For more information, please visit:

Experience with neurology is an advantage. The candidate is expected to have some degree of clinical experience.

The project is a collaboration between the University of Copenhagen and the University of Milano, and the candidate is expected to spend time at Dept. of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen.

Assistant or associate professor in pharmacoepidemiology

Odense

Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Environmental Medicine at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, is offering a new 3-year position at the assistant professor or associate professor level within pharmacoepidemiology. The position is to be filled as soon as possible following external evaluation (expected start May or June 2026).

The academic position

The successful candidate will become part of the pharmacoepidemiology group within the department (see more below). As part of the pharmacoepidemiological research group, and as an assistant/associate professor, you will be expected to develop and maintain an area of particular interest within pharmacoepidemiology where you focus your efforts. Identifying this area and adapting it to your particular niche will be part of the position. The group has a very strong infrastructure and internal teaching program and covers multiple areas of pharmacoepidemiology, including method development, hypothesis-generating screening studies, pregnancy outcomes, drug utilization, pediatrics, and cancer. We are equally interested in candidates that are doing work within these areas as well as those that would expand our group into new territory.

The position comes with teaching obligations in particular within the pharmacy program at the University as well as supervision of bachelor projects and master projects. Additionally, we expect that you will contribute to administrative duties related to running the pharmacy education program, e.g., participating in the leadership group within the pharmacy program, being involved in the Study Board or other activities.

Our department

The candidate will be part of the pharmacoepidemiological research group within the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine (CPPEM).

The pharmacoepidemiology group is led by professors Jesper Hallas and Anton Pottegård. It comprises approx. 40 individuals and focusses on registry-based research covering all aspects of drug use, effect, and safety. The group is highly recognized within pharmacoepidemiology and has a very large international network. Furthermore, we collaborate extensively with the rest of the department and other groups, including both clinical and basic pharmacology research as well as environmental medicine.

The research areas of CPPEM span from pharmacoepidemiology to clinical studies and cell-based basic pharmacology and environmental medicine. Collectively, CPPEM has a strong background in exposure to environmental chemicals, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacogenetics, pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions and therapeutic drug monitoring. Specifically, the pharmacoepidemiological research group utilizes the world-class Danish registries as well as international data sources to assess pharmacological questions in large populations. The translational pharmacology group aims to understand variability in drug toxicity, drug metabolism and drug transport. Examples of this include cell-based models such as induced-pluripotent stem cells, primary human hepatocytes and clinical studies. The environmental medicine group studies the impact of early life exposures to environmental chemicals. In particular per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a focus area, with studies of the adverse health effects of exposure, biomonitoring and advising national and international authorities. The analytical chemistry laboratory analyzes concentrations of drugs or environmental chemicals in various matrices.

We offer an attractive and inspiring working environment with dedicated and highly skilled people. There is a formalized teaching program dedicated to methodological aspects of pharmacoepidemiological research.

As a department, we value having a pleasant and informal working environment across all job functions at the department. Further, attracting and training excellent young researchers is a priority, including internal training in not only methodology but also ‘soft skills’ covering topics such as dissemination, work planning, collaboration, work/life balance etc.

Qualifications

The applicant is required to be fluent in English (written and spoken), to hold a PhD degree within epidemiology or a related discipline and to have a track-record within the field of pharmacoepidemiology (in its broadest sense). Further, the candidate should contribute to a positive and constructive working environment by active participation and be open to interdisciplinary work across the width of the department and its collaborators.
